We All Married Idiots by Elaine W. Miller

About the Book

I married an idiot–and so did my spouse. The word, “idiot” is derived from the Greek word meaning “common man.” Aren’t we all common man? In fact, there is only One who was uncommon man–Jesus Christ.  Elaine W. Miller encourages couples to keep their eyes fixed on Jesus and run a marriage marathon like an idiot, but not like a fool. An idiot may stumble or fall, but a fool runs the wrong way.

We All Married Idiots teaches husbands and wives to stop concentrating on the three things you will never change in your marriage and begin focusing on the ten things you can. Then, you will esteem your mate as a gift to treasure, not as an idiot to tolerate.

 Interview, Bonnie Way

A Tumbled Stone has had a long road to publication. Can you tell us about that?

The road was indeed long. I began writing the sequel shortly after One Smooth Stone came out, but then a lot of “life” happened. My husband resigned from the church he pastored to move on and plant a new church in a nearby community. That meant a big move and a big drop in salary. In the midst of that a refugee couple arrived and moved in with us. Then two of our daughters married. By the time I finally sent the manuscript off to my publisher the economy had taken a drastic down-turn and after holding on to it for quite a long time he decided he could not move forward with publication – his company had scaled down a great deal and he was focusing on non-fiction. It was just after that when I was diagnosed with cancer so once again, “life” got in the way. Then I heard about the Word Alive contest and decided to submit the manuscript. It did not win, but came close and Word Alive offered me a very attractive discount to publish with them. At first I thought it was not going to happen – even with the discount the cost was prohibitive for us at the time – but a wonderful lady who had been waiting patiently for the book contacted me to ask when it was coming out. When I explained what had happened she said, “Well, we just can’t let that go. I’ll sponsor the book.” So, at long last, A Tumbled Stone went to press. It was very exciting and I’m very thankful.

When you wrote One Smooth Stone, did you plan to write a sequel or did this story emerge as you wrote the first book?

As I wrote One Smooth Stone I thought it might lead to a sequel, but didn’t really think about it much until I finished the first book. I wasn’t quite ready to let the characters go and thought the readers might feel the same, so I wrote the epilogue and my publisher committed at that time to publishing the sequel. Then I started to play, “what if” and the plot began to develop.

You’ve spent the last year battling with cancer. How has that affected your writing?

I think the effects of having cancer will show up in all of my work, and life, in the years ahead. I don’t think you can go through something like that and not have it affect every aspect of your life. I think it will deepen my writing as it has deepened my relationship with the Lord.

You’ve now published two novels and three devotional books (congratulations!). What is your next writing project?

I have a few manuscripts on my computer that I’d like to polish and market. One is a young adult fantasy series that has had some interest from a publisher in the past. The other is just an idea at this point but may evolve into something tangible. I also hope to put out a couple more ebooks and I would like to see my devotional for writers of faith in print as well as ebook form.

What advice would you offer to other writers encountering hurdles as they seek publication?

Don’t give up. It was a frustrating time, waiting for A Tumbled Stone to be published, but I believe God’s timing is always perfect. I remember waiting what seemed like an interminable time for One Smooth Stone to arrive, after all the editing and process of publishing, but when it finally arrived I gave the first book out of the box to a friend who gave it to her daughter. That young woman had been raped and was very angry with God. But she read the book and called her mom in tears to tell her “I think maybe God does still love me, in spite of everything.” That made the wait worth it. As I said God’s timing is perfect.

If you could change one thing about either of your novels, what would it be?

Hmm … interesting question. I remember when I got the email from my publisher saying that One Smooth Stone was going to press. My first reaction was, “Oh no, please give it back to me, I can make it better.” I felt that way about A Tumbled Stone as well, that it wasn’t quite good enough yet. So I guess there are always things you’d like to change. But there has to be a point when you take the step and put it out there and let God do what He will with it.

Is there anything else you’d like to add?

Just a word of thanks to all the readers who have been so patiently waiting for A Tumbled Stone. I pray you will be blessed by it. I’d also like to say a public thank you to Jen and Evan at Word Alive Press, and to all the team there. They were great to work with.

AUTHOR BIO

Tracy Krauss is a high school teacher by profession, and a prolific author, artist, playwright and director by choice. She received her Bachelor’s degree from the University of Saskatchewan and has gone on to teach Art, Drama and English – all the things she is passionate about. After raising four children, she and her husband now reside in beautiful Tumbler Ridge, BC where she continues to pursue all of her creative interests.

1. What is the basic story line of the book and what inspired you to write it?

An archeologist and his team find the remains of pterodactyls and humans carefully buried together while on site in Africa. This leads to all kinds of speculation, including theories about a pre-flood race of giants known as Nephilim mentioned in the Bible. The find has the scientific community in an uproar, and soon sabotage, ‘accidents’, and even death threats begin to put the find and Mark’s reputation in jeopardy. The book is a commentary of sorts on the creation/evolution debate. It is full of action and suspense, but also has a romantic element as Mark, the main character, falls in love with an unlikely woman from his past.

2. How long have you been writing?

I started writing my first novel about twenty five years ago, but I only made the leap into the ‘published’ world in 2009 when AND THE BEAT GOES ON released. It is actually the sequel to PLAY IT AGAIN, which is strange since the second book released before the first. They are both stand alone novels, however. I started sending out queries about seven years ago, so it just goes to show that for some of us, writing takes perseverance.

3. What role does character development play in your writing?

I’m big on character development. I want all my characters to be as believable as possible, so I spend a fair bit of time creating bios etc. I think it helps me to know how each one will react to certain situations. We need to be constantly asking, “What is this character’s motivation in this scene?” It’s similar to what an actor will do when preparing to take on a role.

4. What moral or message do you want readers to come away with after reading this book?

The story has a strong redemptive element. Even the most skeptical person can come to know Christ and its never too late in God’s eyes, no matter what you’ve done before. Also, I want readers to come away with questions about the origins of the universe and hopefully do some digging of their own on the topic.

5. How would you characterize this book in terms of its audience and genre?

It is definitely written from a Christian worldview with a very clear message of salvation at the end. However, it does contain what some would call and ‘edge’ in that the characters and situations in the book are not glossed over. It could be called ‘edgy Christian’ or ‘edgy inspirational’ and it is also within the romance category.

6. What exactly do you mean by ‘edgy’?

For me ‘edgy’ means writing from a place of authenticity. This doesn’t mean that it contains anything graphic or explicit, but it does mean that the characters act like real people. They aren’t perfect – even the Christians, so they don’t always think, act, or react perfectly. I don’t like reading fiction that is overly ‘sanitized’, so to speak, so I try not to do that in my own writing.

7. How is this different from other Christian fiction?

I suppose this might mean that it contains some elements that would not normally be found in most Christian fiction. It could be anything from some mild cursing to some sexual content to violence, or even just dealing with ‘touchy’ subjects. There are varying degrees of ‘edgy’ and I feel as if my work is actually quite mild compared to some that I’ve read. There is a fair amount of debate on the topic. I think there is definitely room for everyone, though. It’s what makes the body of Christ interesting. Not everyone is or has to be the same.

8. Who would you consider to be your greatest mentor in terms of your career as an author?

As far as authors go, I have always been a huge fan of Frank Peretti. He’s written some ‘edgy’ stuff but maintained his very clear Christian perspective. The same could be said for Francine Rivers. She blazed a trail with books like Atonement Child and others.

9. How does marketing and promotion factor into your writing life?

I spend several hours per day online doing various tasks such as blogging, social networking and other promotional activities. It’s just a fact of life in today’s industry – something I didn’t realize until after the fact!

10. What have been the highest and lowest points in your writing career so far?

High points would be holding my first published book in my hands, signing every new contract, and getting unsolicited positive reviews. Low points would be some of my early rejections. (I’ve since gotten much thicker skinned…)

Deborah McCarragher, “Mission Possible”

Brief Author Bio Spiritually Uneven Marriage - Fleming Island, FL - Alabaster Box Publishing

Deborah began her journey of creative writing soon after coming to know Jesus Christ as her personal Savior in 1989. She uses her spiritual gifts of encouragement and teaching in her home church. She is also a small business owner of over twenty-five years. Her primary goal is to share her personal testimony with others while bringing hope and practical help through her book. She and her husband have one married son serving in the US Military. They reside in north Florida.

Intro

Mission Possible is a unique book in the Christian marketplace. It addresses a subject that is often overlooked and misunderstood. It is a candid look at my struggles and quest to reach my husband for Christ. I became a believer seven years into our marriage, and this book is my personal testimony. It applies Scripture and biblical principles to everyday struggles encountered within a spiritually mismatched marriage. Mission Possible won the 2010 Readers Favorite Gold Seal Award for best Christian Non-Fiction book, and was nominated for the Christian Small Publisher’s Assoc. Book of the Year Award in 2009.

Mini-Interview

Tell us a little about your background.
I grew up in a Navy family and moved frequently as a child. I married my first husband right out of high school. That marriage ended in divorce four years later. I then remarried in 1982 (to my current husband) and we’ve been married for 30 years. Seven years into our marriage, I gave my life to Jesus as Lord and Savior. I began to grow and mature as a Christian through Bible studies and hearing God’s Word preached. God impressed upon my heart the need to put into writing my journey of a spiritually mismatched marriage.

What inspired you to write this influential book?

I was involved with a local intercessory prayer group at the time, and I was prompted by God during prayer to write down what He was conveying to me about my husband and his salvation. The book was quite literally written while inspired, and without much effort on my part. I typed on the computer as He led me to Bible verses and topics to talk about. I remember writing down the names of the (7) chapters during prayer time on a tablet. I just looked at them afterwards in awe. It was quite a moving experience.

What primary advice do you have for women who are married to “non-believing” husbands?

I think the most important advice is to have faith in Who God Is and His sovereignty. We can’t “pre-package” our spouse’s conversion experience, and God will always do what will bring Him the “most glory”. We also have to remember that we don’t wrestle against flesh and blood. Our spouse (if unsaved) isn’t governed by God’s Spirit – so we have to release them from that accountability. We must have faith that rests in God and not in our own understanding, or by sight!

What kinds of reactions has the book generated thus far?

I have had great reaction to my little book. Some women love it because it is not lengthy, and they can read it quickly – yet refer back to it over & over again. One woman emailed me a testimony that she was nearly ready to leave her husband, but after reading the book, felt that God was leading her to give her marriage another try. That was very humbling and gratifying for me. I just want to help women see that there is an alternative to being miserable in an unequally yoked marriage.

What’s the main message that you’d like readers to take away from it?

I would love readers to discover that God has a plan for each marriage that is in spiritual disunity. It involves us, but it is always done HIS WAY! I want readers to know that it is a process that evolves over time, that we must not put God in a box, but give Him room to move in our spouse’s life. They need to know that because we are not perfect and continue to sin, that Satan will try to discourage and influence us (women) to believe that our “mission” is not possible – but with God, all things are possible!

Any final thoughts you’d like to share?

Just that I know how difficult it is to be married to a spouse who doesn’t share your love and devotion to the Lord Jesus. I, like many of my readers, get frustrated and disillusioned, but I know God has perfect timing and our best interests at heart overall. He wants our spouses to come to a saving knowledge of Him and embrace a future together that brings glory to Him.

How can our readers learn more about you and contact you directly?

My paperback book is available on my website. You can also purchase it at any bookstore, as well as through online stores such as Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

My ebook is available through Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Apple, Smashwords, and other online retailers.

If you husband is unsaved, take heart. A man is most likely to be led to faith in Christ by their believing wife. The sacred Scriptures are not silent concerning your role as a believing wife with your unsaved husband. Deborah, has in Mission Possible, expounded scriptures to encourage women to believe God with a radical faith for the salvation of their spouse. She helps women fulfill their role in the marriage for the salvation of their mate. Give Mission Possible to any lady praying for the salvation of her husband

In Jesus, Scott Yirka, Pastor/Teacher
Hibernia Baptist Church Green Cove Springs, FL

A brief outline of this book is best described by the author: “This book will serve to encourage your heart, strengthen your soul, and stretch your faith.” Mission Possible is a detailed, Scripturally based boot-camp for the believing spouse on a new Godly mission – to be a testimony and a representative of Jesus to your husband. Deborah McCarragher’s experience and energy presents the Word of God to edify and instruct on prayer, pitfalls and priorities.

The book is set up to be used as a devotional or Bible study. It has a “Seek and Find” section with questions, discussion and additional Bible verses after each chapter. There are also short clever remarks inserted into the chapters that can only be described as Pure Encouragement! I highly recommend this paperback book for individual or women’s group Bible studies. For those using an E-book, Mission Possible is very well formatted for the E-book with easy chapter navigation.

Like many of us, you may have been asked if you have accepted Jesus as your Savior or if you have surrendered your life to God. You may have been asked if you’ve invited Jesus into your heart, been born again, or called upon the name of Jesus.

You may have been present during an altar call for salvation at some time in your life, maybe more than once. It you’ve resisted because you’re an independent sort, or because these expressions seem trite and meaningless, read on. I just want a couple minutes of your time.

It is your life, it HAS been given to you, and so it is easy to understand why you may want to hold on to your independence. But let us examine what you are really doing. Chances are you are a pretty smart guy or gal, with lots of brains and talents, and you are probably pretty self sufficient. Maybe you’ve been able to tackle whatever problems have come your way in life, with pretty good results. You may wonder what benefits you would get for surrendering to God.

Let me explain it with a story. Say you own a car. A nice car. A fairly new and reliable car of whatever make you like. You work and get money to put gas in the car and change the oil and tires and whatever else you need to keep the car running. But then you have a few bumps in the road. Your new tires were blown before their time. You had no budget for that. There wasn’t enough in the bank to cover the cost of new ones. So you put off the oil and filter change, quit your regular car cleaning and waxing, maybe sold off your brand-name car mats and bought some retreads. Well, eventually things are going to catch up to you. The dirty oil is going to impact your engine and car performance, your interior is going to get dirty more easily, and — the bottom line — you are going to need more expensive repairs. Say you need an engine overhaul. Oh no. Maybe you start stripping your car for parts. Whatever you can sell to raise and replace with cheaper, you replace. If it will run without it, great. It will still run. And so, there you are with a car that looks like it has been through World War III and you hold your breathe every time you crank the engine. You’ve done a great job with what you had. After all, the car is still running. It is getting you to work. And you may even be saving up for some repairs, or even a new car.

But consider this. God owns everything. He owns the car dealerships! All you had to do was ask and he would have helped you. He may have given you new tires, or a new engine, or even a new car. But you wanted to do everything yourself, or your own way. And so he let you. You are having the privilege of driving around town in a jalopy. For what? Because you don’t want to surrender to God? Surrender what?

That’s the way I’ve come to view giving your life to God. When I surrendered my life to God I didn’t have much left to give. I was pretty much like that car on its last leg, barely able to hobble around. And so I surrendered my life. What did I have to lose? Nothing. All I had to do was gain.  What I learned was: Surrendering your life to God is nothing more than agreeing to do what he says. It’s really really important because he can’t help you very well if you are resisting his efforts. And because he is wise and all knowing, he really has a better plan for our lives than we do.

And now for a few words about independence. When you surrender your life you’re still living. You still have your old jalopy and he may enable you to trade it in for a new set of wheels to drive around. Yeah, you’re different on the inside. You may have some refined goals and ambitions. But you still have a life and a car. You still have a choice whether you want to follow God everyday. And you are still in the front seat, with God at the wheel and you in the passenger seat. Instead of going to the junkyards looking for auto parts, you’re going on a new adventure or to the best restaurant in town.

Finding God: Biblical Answers to Questions about Our Maker, a new ebook to help people build a relationship with God, has been released at New Christian Books Online Store and Smashwords.com. The ebook by Cheryl Rogers deals with important issues like who is God, who is Jesus and what does God expect from us. It also includes information on how to find God and accept the gift of salvation.

“I ran across some literature online that made me realize how vulnerable people are without a relationship with God,” says Cheryl. “This ebook is an attempt to help them establish a relationship with God so they won’t be prey to lies.”

Finding God: Biblical Answers to Questions about Our Maker, is available in multiple ebook formats through the New Christian Books Online Store and Smashwords.com.

The book retails for $1.99, but is available free for limited time at New Christian Books Online Store (www.songsfromtheword.com/NewChristianBooks/store)

“God asks us to seek him and this book will help readers do just that,” Cheryl says. “It lays out the biblical answers we all need to believe in a God we cannot see.”

Cheryl came to know the Lord later in life through a serious immune disorder, so she identifies with those who don’t know God – even though they pray and attend church.

“I needed God very desperately when I surrendered my life to him,” Cheryl recalls. “It is the desire of my heart to spare others grief by helping them find God early, before the problems of life catch up with them.”

After Cheryl succumbed to Environmental Illness in late 1993, she spent three years praying and seeking medical treatments. In late 1996, she surrendered her life to God and he began healing her.

“It was a dreadful period in my life, but I did learn God was real and on my side,” Cheryl says. “He has healed me and transformed my life.”

Finding God: Biblical Answers to Questions About Our Maker is designed to help those 10 and older who attend church but don’t feel their prayers are heard, those who don’t attend church because they find it empty and meaningless, those who want to believe in God but see no reason to and those who question God’s existence. It also is suitable as a gift from believers who want to share their faith in God with others.

Cheryl Rogers publishes New Christian Books Online Magazine, a publication featuring new book announcements, book excerpts, author marketing news, a Bible-based living column and other features of interest to Christian readers and writers. She has authored several books sharing her faith with toddlers through adults, including Fast Track to Victory, A Christian Guidebook, a 40-lesson devotions book aimed at new and young believers, and Just Like Jonah Wail Tales, a short story collection teaching pre-teens and teens there is a price to pay when you disobey God.
